Phakic lenses - an innovative solution for severe ametropia
Phakic lenses are a modern alternative to traditional eyeglasses, contact lenses or laser correction. These implantable artificial lenses are used in addition to the eye's natural lens and are an effective solution to severe nearsightedness or farsightedness and astigmatism.
Unlike lens surgery, in which the natural lens is removed, the native lens remains in the eye. A phakic lens is used as an adjunct and allows for precise correction of visual defects without interfering with the eye’s natural ability to accommodate.
Indications for phakic lenses
Phakic lenses are ideal for patients who are unsuitable for other vision correction procedures, such as laser treatment. The most common indications are.
- Severe myopia (myopia): Up to -20 diopters
- Severe hyperopia (hypermetropia): Up to +10 diopters
- Astigmatism (corneal curvature): With high cylinder correction
- Unsuitable corneal condition: e.g. thin or irregular cornea that does not allow for laser correction
Surgery Procedure
Phakic lens implantation is a safe and minimally invasive procedure that is usually performed on an outpatient basis:
- Preparation: After a thorough preliminary examination, the eye is anesthetized locally to make the procedure painless.
- Implantation: the phakic lens is inserted into the eye through a tiny incision at the edge of the cornea. Depending on the type of lens, it is placed either in front of or behind the iris.
- Closure: The incision is so small that it usually closes on its own and does not require stitches. The entire procedure usually takes 15-30 minutes per eye.
Advantages of phakic lenses
Excellent quality of vision: clear and high-contrast vision even in low-light conditions
Reversibility: the lens can be removed or replaced if necessary
Preservation of the natural lens: The ability to accommodate is preserved, which is especially beneficial for younger patients.
Suitable for severe ametropia: A reliable solution when other procedures are not possible.
Postoperative care and healing process
After surgery, physical activity and rubbing the eyes should be avoided for the first few days. Regular checkups ensure that the lens fits perfectly and that the eye remains healthy. Most patients notice a significant improvement in vision within a few hours after surgery.
Who are phakic lenses suitable for?
Phakic lenses are a great option for patients who want to permanently correct their vision defect. After a comprehensive preliminary examination in our clinic, we will individually advise you whether this method is suitable for you.
